postive parenting and child mental health Child and adolescent health has become very prominent in the news and media over the last few years. Current statistics I feel are extremely worrying, including the following:

Nearly half of all teenagers say they are unable to talk to their parents about their problems
At any one time in the UK, 1 in 10 children under the age of 16 has a mental health disorder
Many GPs are being forced to prescribe anti-depressants to children and young people, as waiting lists for psychological therapies are so long (over 40,000 children are on anti-depressants in the UK)
The average onset age of self-harm is 12
1 in 5 girls (aged 15-17) self-harm
Suicide rates start to increase from age 11
On average, a teenager tries to kill themselves every 22 minutes, and yet for a quarter of the country, there is no emergency help for severely depressed teenagers
168,000 11-15 year olds abused glue and solvents in the last year
A third of all boys and a quarter of all girls will bully other children at some time in their school career
There are over 30,000 children and young people on waiting lists for mental health services in the UK
British young people are involved in more violence, drug taking and binge drinking than teenagers in other European countries

These statistics are showing there is an urgent need for more parents to learn better skills, at doing their job of parenting.

Also parents who want to take the responsibility to look at and change any negative emotional patterns, attitudes and beliefs learned and passed down from their parents, and their parents generations before them. Medicine Wheel of a Committed, Caring Positive Parent

Take an honest look at where you are on 'The Medicine Wheel of a Committed, Caring Positive Parent' opposite. Use the centre of the wheel as a zero and the outer point of each spoke as a 10. Now, put a small cross as to where you feel you are at the moment on each spoke and then join up the crosses to get a sense of how well you are doing as a positive parent.

By doing this exercise you will gain a clearer picture of how well you are doing as a positive parent, where you need to work to improve your skills as a parent, and ultimately what you can do to improve your child's life.
