Choosing to work with a coach, counsellor or therapist is an act of courage, not an act of weakness. Life is a complex endurance event, and getting the best out of it can be no easy task. As human beings we can often fall into the trap of constantly dealing with the urgent, and completely miss or avoid focusing on what is really important to us.

Coaching is for people who really want to get the best out of their life. It is not about working harder or longer hours. Coaching's purpose is, put simply, 'getting you to define and continually work on what is really important to you in your life - to give your life more meaning, and you more fulfilment'.

Some clients achieve what they desire from a minimum number of sessions, while most will need a lot more since the process of self-awareness is like unwrapping an big onion – one layer at a time. However, this process of self-study/examination, although it takes time, sometimes even several years, in truth, may well mean a lot more to you than you first anticipated. In actuality, it is highly likely to be ‘tremendously rich’ internally to you.

Coaching is not 'therapy' by another name although the key theoretical underpinnings, models and techniques found their origins in the field of psychology and cognitive behavioural therapy. Coaching is results orientated and is generally commenced on the premise that clients are 'whole'. However, in my experience as a coach and EFT practitioner, if not properly dealt with by the person - unresolved feelings from the past will eventually come up at another point in time, either in a relationship or as an emotional stress or illness later on in life. For this reason I use EFT techniques alongside coaching, to ensure I am giving my clients both sides of the coin, so to speak.

As a Coach I can offer you a detached, objective 360 degrees feedback channel unlike your friends, family or work colleagues. I work face-to-face with clients local to the area in which I live, and over the telephone with clients around the world. Coaching is ideal to be done over the telephone, but for some issues/challenges I recommend working face-to-face with me.

Choosing a Coach

The client/coach relationship could, in itself, be the most important part of the work – some leading neuroscientists and psychologists say it could be everything. Although there are many coaches, counsellors and therapists around the world trained and 'accredited' in different approaches of working with people (humanistic counselling, gestalt therapy, integrative psychotherapy CBT, etc.) these approaches often do very little to define the actual person practising, and even less to define the unique energetic relationship between the client/coach that begins when two people work together.

What is definitely important is that you feel both comfortable with and able to connect to whoever you choose to work with. This may initially take a little time, perhaps a single session.

Coaching Contracts

Almost all coaches have some sort of working contract, whether written or verbal which should clearly define costs and length of sessions, required notice before ending and what happens in situations of cancelled sessions, sickness etc. It is common practice to commit to a minimum number of sessions at the beginning, usually around six.

If you are planning to work with me you will need to download this Medicine Wheel of Life.

Medicine Wheel of Life

medicine wheel of life example

Take an honest look at where you are on ‘The Medicine Wheel of Life’ opposite. Use the centre of the wheel as a zero and the outer point of each spoke as a 10. Now, put a small cross as to where you feel you are at the moment on each spoke and then join up the crosses to get a sense of where you are in each area of your life.

By doing this exercise you will gain a clearer picture of how well you are focusing on and working on, what is important to you. Ultimately it will give you some idea of the areas you need to work on to create more balance and satisfaction in your life.
